Blessing Jorryn ~ Day 20

Day 20: Today’s focus: patience.

Oh boy, here we go. My strong suit… patience… And once again, as always, opportunities are provided to practice when you make a decision to work on something specific! I read Psalm 86:15 this morning during quiet time: “But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.” If I want to be like Christ, then being patient is key. It says He is compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love! Hmm, are these all things I need? YES! I would be lost without God’s mercy on me. Without His compassion, His grace, His patience. Don’t my boys deserve the same? Even when the days feel long, their choices that frustrate me are nothing compared the things God has shown me grace for. If God can be compassionate, gracious, abounding in love, and slow to anger with all of us, then I certainly can show the same compassion to my boys.

A few months ago, Jorryn was displaying less than ideal behavior. He was supposed to go a special boy scout meeting that night and the entire day we battled. One bad attitude after another. I felt so frustrated. I told him he wouldn’t be allowed to attend his event that night because he wasn’t obeying. He was SO upset. I hated for him to miss the opportunity to be with friends and work on their service project together. But I felt like I had no other means to get him to listen. I went to another room and started praying, asking the Lord to show me the answer that we needed. That He would give us peace and harmony. After a few minutes of praying, I clearly heard “how many times have I shown you mercy you didn’t deserve”? WOW!

No matter how long the day may seem to me, how frustrated I may be in a moment.. it’s just a moment. My boys hearts are my foremost concern — the other things are just “stuff”. Yes, I want them to be raised to understand consequences to their choices but I do not want them to learn that by me losing my patience and saying things that I don’t mean. I want to be slow to anger and abounding in love, grace, and compassion always!
