How to Save While Shopping Online

{Added bonus: my ultimate budgeting tip!}

Recently, I purchased a brand new, beautiful Vera Bradley purse. I had my eye on it for the past couple of months. The print is something different than I would normally go for and I loved the idea of having something different to carry. Plus, it offers lots of room for all the things a mommy needs in her purse!

There is a cute shop a few blocks from our house that sells Vera Bradley bags. My initial reaction when I saw the purse was to grab it, head to the check out, and then head home to fill it with all my goodies. But my mindset has changed over the past two years. I knew that I could do better than spending $80 on this purse. My gut told me to wait and get it for less. So I did. I followed the steps that I outline below and this week the purse was delivered to my house for $30!

Before you read my online savings tips.. here’s my ultimate budgeting tip.. just in case it helps any of you! πŸ™‚

My ultimate budgeting tip: have small children. Small children make the task of going to the store to spend money on even the most desired items seem daunting and not worth it. You will suddenly find ways to go without milk, bread, and eggs instead of packing up the kids and heading to the store. Forget about new clothes or fancy gadgets! Who needs them! However, if you do find there are some items you need to buy, you might want to consider getting them online. Because I am currently living in the middle of my ultimate budgeting tip {read: raising three young boys} I mostly shop exclusively online these days.

Here are ways I save while shopping online:

  • Wait.

I don’t purchase the item immediately. I think it over. Is it something I will use long term? Do I have something else I could use instead? Is it a need or a want? I also consider how the purchase will effect our budget. Sometimes, I need to decide to wait and save for an item instead of purchasing it immediately.

  • Compare.

I have been amazed at the huge difference in prices between retailers. I price out the item, including checking out Amazon. I have often found that shopping online saves me the most.. plus, I don’t have to leave my house! πŸ™‚

  • Reviews.

I check out the item reviews from other buyers. It’s not a very good deal if it breaks two days after I buy it.. so I want to make sure I know what I’m getting since I’m not physically touching the item in a store. I can’t tell you how many products I’ve saved myself the trouble from because of checking out those reviews!

  • Price matching.Β

Many stores offer price matching in store and online as well. Check with customer service to find out if the store you want to purchase from offers price matching before you start online shopping.

  • Coupons.

I don’t just clip from the newspaper, I search for and use coupons and promotion codes while shopping online as well! I check out sites like HelloCoin where I get deals like money off my purchase and free shipping, and even cash back on my purchases. What could be better than getting paid to shop!?! If I’m not sure what promotions are available for what I need, I search Swagbucks to find out!

I wait and compare – sometimes I only want items because it is an impulse. I know that if I wait a couple of days and still want the item, it is worth the purchase. Using ebates and other coupon sites can help with reducing the cost too.
Great tips – thanks for sharing.

So true, Cristine! That’s one thing I still struggle with.. forcing myself to wait because so often it’s just an impulsive want!

great tips, Layne! It’s funny how things change when you have kids! This winter with the flu epidemic, we’ve been quarantined. I haven’t wanted to leave the house. But the bright side, I’m saving a lot of money! πŸ˜‰ And definitely not eating out. Definitely a good thing!
