Prayer Words for My Boys

One of the deepest desires of my heart is to raise Godly young men that seek first His kingdom and put their focus and passion in God. As such, I have been reading a number of books over the last few weeks with this as the focus.

The first book is Praying Circles Around Your Children by Mark Batterson. I was so encouraged by this short, easy to read book. One of the key points that stuck with me is choosing prayer words for your children. You basically choose words to cover your kids in prayer with over and over. I was really in love with this idea. How beautiful to ask the Lord what words He has for your kiddos and then speak those words into their lives!

The second book is Warrior Prayers: Praying the Word for Boys in the Areas They Need it Most by Brooke McGlothlin. As a mom, I many times not only feel exhausted by my little guys, but also at a loss on how to parent them. I’m a girl! Most of the ideas they come up with, I wouldn’t have dreamed about as a kid, let alone now! Boys are a different breed and they require a different kind of prayer. Brooke is amazingly encouraging! She understands how difficult it can be to effectively parent little boys and offers up the only real solution: pray! We don’t have all the answers, but God does and we can speak words into our sons lives directly from the Lord. One of the things that stuck with me the most from Brooke’s book is that WE don’t have the power to change our kids.. only God does. I felt an incredible release after reading that. I don’t have the answers and I can’t make my boys act a certain way. But I can pray over them and let God work in their lives.

This week, I have spent time in prayer asking the Lord what words He has for me to pray over each of my boys. I was also blessed by the sections of scripture that Brooke includes in her book, broken down into specific words and ideas that I was able to easily incorporate. I have been able to add words and scriptures to my prayer binder to pray over my little guys every day. I can’t change their attitudes with punishments or lectures but God can change their hearts. What an encouraging word!

** You can also download the Prayers Over my Children sheet from my Etsy shop to add to your prayer binder! It has 17 prayers for your kids plus Bible verses for each.
