Price per Unit & Ounce – Finding Your Best Deal

Before I started couponing and actually paying attention when I shopped, I thought that the bigger an item was, the better deal it would be. I can’t believe all the money I must have wasted! Many people think that buying in bulk or buying the largest size available will save them the most. Now I know how to compare sizes to get the best deal. Here are some of my tips:

  • to calculate the price of an item per ounce, you will need to divide the total item cost by the number of ounces it contains

For Example: a 42 oz. canister of oats costs $4.39. The price per ounce is 10.4 cents. {4.39 ÷ 42 = 10.4}

  • to calculate the price by unit, you will need to divide the total item cost by the total number of items

For Example: a 12 pack of toilet paper costs $5.99. The price per unit is 49 cents. {5.99 ÷ 12 = 49}

  • If you are using coupons, you will want to add in the coupon and then re-determine the price by ounce or unit.

For Example: you have a 50c coupon for the toilet paper and your store will double it to $1 off. So your new price is $4.99 with coupon – meaning your unit price becomes 41 cents per unit. Say you have a $1 off coupon for the oats making your new price $3.39 – making your price per ounce 8 cents!

  • some stores include this info on the shelf tags, but some do not so it’s a good idea to have your calculator handy, especially to factor in your coupon savings!
  • I refer to my paper product price list when purchasing paper goods. Using tips like stocking up on toilet paper when it’s 1c a square foot helps save us a lot of money!

I have found that many times the smaller size is a better price, especially with my coupons. Also, my store usually has the smallest size on sale during the 10 for $10 sales. I would rather have a whole bunch of smaller size products I got for dirt cheap or free than pay extra for a larger size!
