What Order Should I Hand Over Coupons In?

“I’m getting ready to check out, does it matter how I hand over my coupons to the cashier?”

This is another popular question! While most times it doesn’t matter what coupon you hand over first, here are some tips to use when checking out.

  • If you have a particularly large stack of coupons, you should break them up into smaller piles to hand over one at a time to your cashier. Not only does this make it a little less overwhelming for them, it also prevents them from getting stuck together or missing some. I usually say something like “these are for the bread and rolls” and then when they’re ready for the next batch, I’ll say “these are for the soups, cans, and condiments.”
  • Make sure if you have a catalina for a certain amount off your purchase to hand that over right away. For instance, if you have a catalina for $5 off your next $25 purchase, you’ll want to hand that over before anything else because your coupons will drop your total down.
  • If you are using store coupons and manufacturer coupons, I usually hand over my store coupons first. This usually makes things run smoother, especially at a store like Walgreens because I’ve found the machine gives a lot of beeps if you do manufacturer coupons first.
  • If you are price matching at a store, I think it’s a good idea to let the cashier know right up front if that you have items to price match. They might want to ring those up a certain way and it’s nice to give them a heads up! Also remember to have your ads ready for the price match just to make it easier on everyone!
  • You should also tell your cashier about any rain checks you have or B1G1 right off the bat.

Now it’s your turn to tell me – do you have any special order you check out in?
